Dr. Thomas Morand O.D. Obituary

Thomas G. Morand, age 93, of Wilmington, passed away July 10, 2022.  Born in Pleasant Ridge, Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of the late Frank B. and Elizabeth (Homan) Morand.  Thomas graduated from St. Xavier High School and received his bachelor's degree from Xavier University of Cincinnati.  He attended Northern Illinois College of Optometry where he received his Doctor of Optometry.  Dr. Morand was a veteran of the US Army and was stationed at Percy Jones Hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan during the Korean war where he met his wife, Mary Lou, who is preceded in death. 

Dr. Morand started his Optometric practice in Wilmington in 1954 and was in practice here for 33 years. He was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church and a 3rd degree Knight of Columbus. Thomas and Mary Lou were long time Eucharistic Ministers and sang in the Resurrection Choir at St. Columbkille.  Tom was also a member of the Wilmington Elks Lodge and the Lion’s Club.

Tom and his wife, Mary Lou, enjoyed traveling, including visits to Maine in the summer, and taking several extended trips abroad.  Tom enjoyed being with all of his extended family and had a very special group of close-knit friends.  He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada with lifelong friends, working in his gardens, supporting his local sports teams, relaxing at his beloved Camp Marydale and bush-hogging on his farmland in the Wilmington countryside.

Tom is survived by his loving family:  children, Michael T. (Brenda) Morand of Sidney, OH, Shirley A. (Robert) Anderson of Freeport, Maine, Jill E. (Danny) Vaughn of Wilmington, OH, Nancy S. (Barry) Thurston of Otisfield, Maine, John D. Morand of Wilmington, OH, Mary K. (John) McDermott of Whitehouse, OH, and James F. (Barbara) Morand of Zionsville, IN; grandchildren, Erik Sabin, Jason Palumbo, Jessica Hancock, Michael Hancock, Kevin McDermott, Kelsey Badia, Maggie Amrein, Erin Riehl, Anna McDermott, Mary C. “Katie” McDermott, Lizzie McDermott, Sara Morand, Joseph Morand, David Morand, Andrew Morand, Matthew Morand, and Rachel Morand; great-grandchildren, Evin Morey, Lain Morey, Emma Badia, Aiden Badia, Simon Badia, Ignatius “Iggy” McDermott, Kiva McDermott, and Olivia Amrein.

In addition to his wife and parents, Thomas was preceded in death by his brothers, Francis “Pete” Morand and Robert Morand, and his sisters, Rosemary Pleiman and Betty Baumgartner.

The family will receive friends at Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, Ohio from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Thursday, July 14, 2022.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, July 15, 2022 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church, 73 N. Mulberry Street, Wilmington, Ohio. Father Bernard J. Weldishofer, Celebrant.  A luncheon will be held directly afterward.   A service for extended family will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Montgomery, Ohio 2:30 PM, Friday, July 15, 2022.
