Judith Ann “Judy” Cunningham Hales, 77, of Wilmington, died peacefully Thursday, July 8, 2021 at Cape May Retirement Village. She was born September 16, 1943 in Portsmouth, Ohio, daughter of the late Earl J. Cunningham and Mary F. Cunningham. She graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1961. She earned a M. Ed. Degree in 1988 from Miami University and a B.S. Degree from The Ohio University. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority.
Previously, she had been a substitute teacher for Wilmington City Schools and surrounding high schools, was a learning disabilities tutor in Clinton County, and had been an adjunct faculty member at Wright State University in developmental studies. Previously, she also was a sales associate of the Borton-McDermott Company and Bennett Realty. Judy also loved books and enjoyed working at the Books ‘N’ More bookstore. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wilmington.
Judy is survived by her two children, Rick Bassler, of Columbus; Jennifer Bassler, of Wilmington, a brother, Dr. Richard Cunningham of Dublin and his wife Barbara; two nieces, Emily Ann (Mike) Nugent, Laura Ellen Cunningham; and many friends.
Judy was an avid animal lover and rescued many special friends that were in need. Memorial contributions can be made in her name to the Clinton County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1024, Wilmington, Ohio 45177.
The family will have a private graveside service that will be held later.
