Roger Steed Obituary

Roger Doyle Steed, 84 of Wilmington, OH, beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, July 3, 2025.

He was born on March 19, 1941, in Vandalia, OH. The son of Kenneth and Ruby (Melton) Steed, who preceded him in death.

The youngest of four, Roger grew up in the Dayton area. He graduated from high school in 1962 and attended Wright State University, where he was part of the first graduating class of 1966.

He served briefly in the military before going to work for NCR (National Cash Register) in Dayton as a computer program analyst, back when computers took up whole rooms. He often took his children to work with him to show them the fascinating inner working of the machines, and they all have fond memories of coloring on reams of leftover green and white lined computer paper.

His work in computer programming had him moving often with his family first to Florida then to New Hampshire, but he ultimately settled back in Ohio to be closer to his parents in their golden years.

Many remember Roger for his lovely baritone voice, which he used to great acclaim while a member of The Barbershop Harmony Society, also known as the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA). During his performances he always made sure his children were included whether on stage for skits or called out in the evening's program.

He also lent his vocal talents to several quartets and the gospel group "The Joyful Sounds."

Throughout his life, Roger had a passion for adventure and was a licensed private pilot for many years. Summers with his children often meant road trips to explore Niagara Falls, The Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, and many more National Park sites and monuments with activities ranging from white water rafting, hiking, and caving. There were also many treasured visits to see family in Carlinville, IL and Chicago.

Roger was also an avid golfer, traveling all over the country to test his skills on some of the best courses available.

He was the proud father of three children who survive him, Kerry Roger Steed and his wife Valerie of Wilmington, OH, Brooks Jewell of Brooklyn, NY, and Annie Steed. Kerry was his father's devoted and tireless caregiver for the past several years of his life.

Roger is also survived by his grandchildren Abbey and Andy Steed (who shares his grandfather's love of golf), and Jack Jewell.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his sister Janet Burns and brothers John and Stanley Steed.

In keeping with Roger's wishes, the family is planning a private celebration of life.
