Samuel Shingler Obituary

Samuel C. Shingler, 89, of Wilmington, Ohio passed away Sunday, February 27, 2022.  He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Roberta Ann Cleland Shingler.  They were married October 7, 1956 in the Martinsville Methodist Church. 

Sam was born October 11, 1932 in Scioto County, youngest son of the late Roy Harrison Shingler and Ina Catherine Harris Shingler.  He graduated from Glenwood High School in New Boston, Ohio in 1951.

He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1952-1954.  After returning from the war, Sam and his brother, Harold, were owner/operators of the Shingler Brothers Well Drilling Co. in Martinsville, Ohio.  Sam also drove a Martinsville school bus.  He graduated from Wilmington College in 1963 receiving a Bachelor of Education Degree.  Sam taught school in Mason, Portsmouth, North Ridgeville, and Newcomerstown, Ohio. His teaching career consisted of science, drivers’ education, coaching, Special Education, and OWA and OWE Programs. 

Sam wrote, implemented, and coordinated the Occupational Work Adjustment (OWA) and Occupational Work Experience (OWE) Programs for Jr. and Sr. High students while at Newcomerstown Schools.  The students studied the “World of Work,” had a part-time job, and carried the same academic studies as other students. In his spare time Sam enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping.

In addition to his wife, Sam is survived by his son, Jeffrey R (Tamara) Shingler, his granddaughter, Brandi R. (Douglas Clendening) Shingler; his nieces, Sharon Wilkerson, Cindy Shingler, Candy Latham, Chris Tidrick, Rita Thompson, and Nancy Shingler; his nephews, Stephen Dowdy and Michael Dowdy; his brother-in-law, James A. (Pat) Cleland; as well as numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Pauline Branham, Loretta Dixon, Betty Dowdy, and Virginia Fields; three brothers-in-law, Homer Dixon, Leo Dowdy, and William Fields; three brothers, Donald, Harold, and Roy Shingler; three sisters-in-law, Beatrice, Irene, and Josephine Shingler; and a nephew, Donald Shingler Jr.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 10, 2022 at Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South Street, Wilmington, Ohio.  A service with Rev. Dean Feldmeyer officiating will begin at 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 10.  Interment will be in Martinsville I.O.O.F. Cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 49 Honor Guard.
